Skill Sets
MMSC Thoroughbred’s will be taught the skill sets listed below. Mastery depends on temperament and length of stay prior to adoption.
Ground Manners:
- Grooming: body, head, stomach, legs, picking feet
- Cross Tie
- Standing still when tacking, bathing, fly spray applications
- Lowering head to halter and bridle
- Calm when blanketing
- Able to be bandaged
- Trailer load
Ground Work:
- Mindful leading, turning, halting
- Leading at left shoulder, right shoulder, and in front
- Walking obstacle course, over objects (logs, jumps), through (puddles, narrow
- spaces), over (tarps, alien stuff)
- Lunging: free, tacked up, in side reins
- Long Lining, driving
Riding:
- Standing still when mounting (from ground, mounting block, leg up)
- Mounting and dismounting from right side
- Walk, trot, canter soft and round
- Halt, back up
- Turn on forehand, turn on haunches
- Lateral work (leg yields, should in, haunches in)
- Extension and collection
- Simple changes at canter
- Cavalletti, jumping
- Trail riding
- Several horses in the arena at one time
- Opening gates when mounted
- Parade of Breeds at the KY Horse Park
- Horse Showing
