Interactive Demonstrations
Interactive Demonstrations
Every Saturday, when the Kentucky Horse Park is open, the MMSC opens its doors to the
general public. “Big Agnus” (the big horse van) and MMSC crew head down to the Big Barn and
picks up whoever might be interested in seeing what we do. When they unload at the Center,
visitors are introducted to Secretariat, learn the life cycle of a Thoroughbred, what the
Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation is all about, our ReSchooling program and finally get to do
some hands on work!
Visitors are taught how to groom a horse using our two mascots, Ferdinand’s Star and Fly Lite.
They see how calm these horses are, as opposed to the stereotypical Thoroughbred, and what it
takes to take care of a horse in general.
Finally, the guests are given the opportunity to hold different types of tack- seeing the difference
between race and English tack and how heavy a western saddle really is. Those who would like
to, can put on sample silks, hold the racing tack and “weigh-in” before doing a stick horse race
around our walking ring.
This demonstration allows the public to really understand what racehorses go through and how
we work to re-train them.
