Maker's Mark Secretariat Center Now Open To Kentucky Horse Park Visitors!

The Secretariat Center has announced its official visiting hours for guests of the Kentucky Horse Park. The Center will now welcome visitors between the hours of 9 and 2 Monday through Saturdays, with interactive demonstrations on Saturday mornings from 10 to 11. Anyone considering adoption who would like to see a particular horse is encouraged to call the office (859-246-3080) to set up an appointment.

The Maker’s Mark Secretariat Center was designed as a showcase facility for the Thoroughbred athlete, as well as a re-schooling and adoption center for the soundest, sanest off-the-track horses available. “Our purpose is to herald the athleticism of the off-track Thoroughbred,” says Susanna Thomas, director of the Secretariat Center.

Visitors to the Center will be able to witness daily training and evaluation of our ex-racehorses during their journey through our Horse Centered® Re-schooling Program. The Horse-Centered® Program is designed to prepare a horse for adoption in 30 to 90 days after their arrival to the Center and focuses on a combination of training methods. The first stage of the Program is an extensive physical evaluation based on consultation with a vet, farrier, equine dentist, and chiropractor to determine the strengths and weaknesses of each horse before it goes into training. Next, the horse will be schooled in a variety of methods including natural horsemanship, classical training, early-age racetrack training, and finally a concentration on the basics of hunt seat and dressage.
