That’s what Bill and Sue Finley did when they sponsored Renaissance Bob.
The New York-bred was once an allowance winner at Saratoga, but the nagging injuries that can affect a horse when they grow caught up to him. Eventually, he was unable to compete at even the lowest class level at Penn National. From there, Renaissance Bob was sent to auction where he was purchased by a buyer whose intention was to send him to the slaughterhouse.
But, Bill Finley, while working on a story about horse slaughter for the New York Daily News, stepped in and convinced the buyer to sell the horse to him for a few hundred dollars. Inches away from death, Renaissance Bob was taken to a TRF satellite facility in New Jersey, where he has lived ever since the Finley’s sponsored him
“Now, for just $3 a day- the price of a cappuccino at the local coffee house- we “own” our racehorse,” Sue Finley said. “He’s near enough that we can visit him and we do. Watching him roam his paddock with the warm sun on his back, a world away from the fate that await him, well, it’s hard to imagine there is any way our $3 a day could have been better spent.”
You, too, can feel that sort of special relationship with a retiree, knowing that your donation has helped keep your horse happy, healthy and that he or she will live out their years in comfort and out of harm’s way. (Visiting your horse may depend on the facility where the horse is located. Once you have sponsored a horse, the TRF will gladly provide you with contact information on how you can get in touch with the farm manager at that horse’s home).
